|Evaluation of post-war architecture in the Czech and Slovak Republics
|The Facebook group ''Ugly Architecture'' (available in Czech as ''[https://www.facebook.com/groups/OsklivaArchitektura Ošklivá architektura]'') was created in 2018 to foster a relationship with post-war architecture among the broadest possible audience. Although its founders support this architecture, the term "ugly" was chosen as an exaggeration because, in their view, the majority of the population still called it "ugly."
Now, after several years, we would like to try a pilot project to evaluate the visual perception of these buildings by architecture students.

Aktuální verze z 19. 11. 2025, 06:08

On this page you can find an offer of cooperation in research related to architecture, art and design in the architecture of the second half of the 20th century. The offer is open to students of related fields, especially at the master's and doctoral levels. The cooperation is not remunerated, however, the student will gain new experience in scientific methodology, an insight into the influence of Western architecture on Eastern architecture and the opportunity to become a co-author of an article or publication.

You can express your interest by sending your structured CV and a sample of a professional text to the e-mail of the project guarantor, Mr. Jan Lochman: janlochman at gmail.com

1 The influence of Scandinavian architecture in the Czech Republic Especially in the second half of the 1940s and 1950s, thousands of prefabricated wooden houses were built in the Czech Republic. Some of them were purchased from Finland. Although other European companies designed others, the term Finnish became common not only in the Czech Republic. This research aims first to determine what kind of houses they are —i.e., who designed them — and then to explain why they are called Finnish even though they are not from Finland.

So far, we have created a dataset containing the locations of these houses, the dates of their construction, and their basic classification.

In the next phase, we will divide them into categories based on external visual elements, then conduct document research to gather more information.
